Definitions


  • Linear Narrative
    • A narrative with a beginning, middle and an end. In that order
  • Nonlinear Narrative
    • A disjointed narrative that does not follow the three part structure of a linear narrative
  • Circular Narrative
    • A narrative structure that features the repetition of many key elements of the story.
  • Parallel Narrative
    • Two narratives that coexist in a large story structure
  • Convergent Narrative

  • Interweaving Narrative

  • Impressionist Narrative

  • Flashbacks
    • When the story is momentarily interrupted by a time jump back to a memory.
  • Real Time
    • When something ages as time goes on. An example of real time would be the comic character John Constantine. He has aged in real time with the comics.
  • Dream Sequences
    • Dream sequences often feature a blurred border or an edited sound, signifying that it is a dream sequence.
  • POV
    • POV or Point Of View is when the scene is shot from the view of a character, so through their eyes.
